The colony village of Willemsoord is a still young hamlet that was founded in 1820 by the Society of Benevolence. The location is very northern, almost on the border with the province of Friesland and on the A32.
The hamlet was created when the Society of Benevolence founded the colony of Willemsoord. In the 19th century, poor people from the west of our country came to work here. They turned forest, heathland and sand drifts into agricultural land. People who did not feel at home there after a while were banished to the edge of the colony. They built a hut there and led an independent life comparable to neighboring Marijen camps.
De Steen Café De Steen is located in the center of Willemsoord. Here the coffee is always ready for you! The name of the café is derived from a large field boulder; one of many boulders transported from Scandinavia to these regions during the last Ice Age. The stone has traditionally been a meeting point for people from Willemsoord.
