Zuidveen is close to Steenwijk. A little further on is Giethoorn. In the past peat was dug here; hence the addition of peat to the south. It is a road village in a transition area with many vistas to the wide peat polder landscape. You can clearly see from the farms in the village that you are in a transitional area. At many farms you could speak of head-hull construction, but there is little unity. Most farms have the banner at the front, but there are also some where the banner is in the side wall of the business area. This is similar to the Saxon farm type.
From Zuidveen you have a good view of the Steenwijker skyline, in which the Sint-Clemenstoren dominates.
